Protherics is the first UK biotechnology company
to have fully developed and manufactured two biopharmaceutical products
to the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sales
from these products CroFabTM, for the treatment of rattlesnake
bites and DigiFabTM, for the treatment of digoxin overdose
have enabled Protherics to become one of only a handful of profitable
European biotechnology companies.
Clean Room Construction Ltd is a specialist
construction company designing controlled environments for science
and technology. It is one of only 1,000 winners from large and small
enterprises all over the country in the public and private sectors.
They faced a tough test in order to satisfy the independent Awards
Panel. Mike Webb, CRC’s health and safety
co-ordinator, has attributed the achievement to the company’s
“proactive stance.”
He said: “The key requirement of the award is that you need
to achieve an excellent record on workforce accidents which is better
than the average in your industry. CRC didn’t have any workforce
accidents last year.” “You also have to demonstrate
a commitment to health and safety procedures and systems and to a
show proactive approach rather than just simply reacting to the requirements
of legislation.”
CRC has developed training programmes for staff and prides itself
on encouraging everyone to play an active role in all health and safety
matters. All members of staff actively promote it rather than treat
is as a necessary chore.
Winners must have lower than average accident rates, good safety policies
and safety plans and commitment to health and safety at the highest
board level. They must detail their health and safety officers’
qualifications and provide details of significant advances in health
and safety for the year.
Mr David Ballard, Director General of the British Safety Council,
says: “The International Safety Awards highlight organisations
that demonstrate a commitment to health and safety. By making safety
an important feature of everyday work practice, Clean Room
Construction Ltd is reducing accidents and ill health while
improving productivity and profitability.
